Mission & Goals

APREN is the Portuguese Renewable Energy Association and gathers the interests of a vast majority of the Portuguese independent producers of renewable electricity and acts as their speaker with the relevant national authorities. APREN is considered a valuable partner to help establishing faster procedures for the permitting of new renewable energy power plants, and improve legislation related with the sector.

EU Legislative Interests

APREN is actively following the national transposition of the legislative changes expected from the implementation of the REPowerEU package. APREN has also been responding to every public consultation on energy and climate, especially files with substantial impact to the renewable energy sector. This work has been done with a thorough and active participation of APREN Members, and through direct contact with governmental bodies, policy makers and other European associations.

Communication Activities

Annually, APREN conducts an international conference dedicated to relevant issues for the renewable energy sector. APREN's Annual Conference 2025, entitled "Portugal Renewable Energy Summit 2025" was a reflection on the industry trends, from the point of view of the producers, users and the society as a whole. This conference had a special focus on political and technical matters that deeply affect the Portuguese and European energy sector, and counted with the participation of important figures, from stakeholders to policy makers, both national and international. Besides the periodical publications (weekly and monthly reports, yearbook, …), APREN also develops and publishes other studies on relevant issues, to be used as guiding documents in the establishment of the position of the Association on key topics, to better assist policy makers in the design of the most adequate policy frameworks to develop and grow the renewable energy sector in Portugal. Currently, APREN has five on going Working Groups, with participation of its Members, focusing on: Policy and Regulation, Permitting, Self-Consumption, Offshore Wind and Security in Wind farms. These Working Groups are a key element in establishing strategic positions in the most important and relevant topics in the sector. APREN has also a strong involvement at the European level, manifested primarily through the participation in European projects and through its partnership with several European Associations that defend the technologies that APREN represents, which enable the monitoring of European Energy Policy and developments in the sector in other European Member States. APREN participation in the associative international activities is mainly reached through the following Associations: EREF – European Renewable Energy Federation, WindEurope, Solar Power Europe, Hydrogen Europe, Bioenergy Europe, EASE – European Association for Storage of Energy, Ocean Energy Europe, World Forum Offshore Wind, and REN21 - Renewable Energy Policy Network for the 21st Century.
