Mission & Goals
PFI was established as a not-for-profit entity in 2023, with the aim of structuring and mobilising blended finance for peatland restoration in Ireland. As part of this remit, we have developed and trialed the Peatland Standard for Ireland, a certification scheme allowing for the objective quantification of emissions reductions, water benefits and biodiversity uplift on restoration sites. This offers singular bundled "ecosystem certificates" as opposed to stacked credits of carbon, water or biodiversity alone. Our multi-stakeholder platform contains a widening array of government organisations, academics, voluntary organisations, semi-States and community groups.

Communication Activities
Through alignment with the WaterLANDS Horizon 2020 project, PFI has been involved in holding workshops and seminars with policy makers from across various DGs, including DG AGRI, DG CLIMA, DG ENV, REA, DG-RTD, etc on matter relating to achieving tangible restoration ambition. This has included the publication of various policy briefs on restoration success, combining public and private finance through public-private partnership, and the development of the peatlands section of the Carbon Farming and Removals Certification Framework. Finally, we continue to feed into the development of Ireland's National Restoration Plan, as mandated by the Nature Restoration Regulation. PFI sits in the Interdepartmental Working Group for Finance.
