Mission & Goals

Peace Parks Foundation is dedicated to creating large, sustainable transboundary conservation landscapes across southern Africa—where vibrant ecosystems and thriving human communities coexist harmoniously. Its core purpose is to restore and safeguard biodiversity, nurture ecological connectivity, and regenerate natural and cultural heritage, transcending political boundaries through the establishment and revitalisation of transfrontier conservation areas. Founded in 1997 by President Nelson Mandela, Prince Bernhard of the Netherlands, and Dr. Anton Rupert, Peace Parks has contributed to the creation of ten TFCAs, placing millions of hectares under cooperative conservation, fostering regional peace and socio-economic development. Guided by its Strategy 2030 and Vision 2050, the foundation focuses on five priority landscapes, ten key protected areas and seven ecological linkages—aiming ultimately to secure 18 functional transboundary landscapes spanning one million square km by 2050.

EU Legislative Interests

Peace Parks Foundation’s engagement with EU institutions relates to the implementation and external cooperation dimensions of the following EU policies and strategies: • EU Biodiversity Strategy for 2030 (under the European Green Deal), in particular the EU’s global biodiversity commitments and support for protected and conserved areas outside the EU. • NaturAfrica Initiative (DG INTPA), focusing on the design and implementation of EU-funded biodiversity conservation and landscape programmes in Africa. • Neighborhood, Development and International Cooperation instrument (NDICI – Global Europe 2021–2027), specifically programming priorities related to biodiversity conservation, climate resilience, sustainable livelihoods, and support to protected and conserved areas in partner countries. • EU external action on biodiversity and climate under the European Green Deal, including policy coherence between biodiversity, climate, development, and regional cooperation objectives in EU partnerships with African states. Engagement is non-commercial and aims to provide technical input and field-based evidence from implementation in southern Africa.
