Mission & Goals

Representing a community of scholarly publishers and related organisations, OASPA is committed to developing and disseminating solutions that advance open access, preserve the integrity of scholarship, and promote best practice. OASPA is a trusted convenor of open access stakeholders and a venue for productive collaboration. One of the core goals of OASPA is to support the transition to a world in which open access becomes the predominant model of publication for scholarly outputs. Another core goal of OASPA is to help ensure a diverse, vibrant, and healthy open access market that supports a wide variety of innovative solutions and business models.

EU Legislative Interests

Our main interest is Horizon Europe and the associated policies which relate to publication of academic research in Europe - these policies are tending to influence open access publishing and open science, the prevalence of which are in line with our mission and purpose. We are also involved in the multi-stakeholder project ALMASI, funded by the European Commission, which seeks to build global capacity for institutional-based open access publishing. Finally we were involved in the recently-concluded PALOMERA and DIAMAS projects, also focussed on open access publishing and policies.

Communication Activities

We organise an annual conference to bring together key stakeholders in open access publishing, to discuss developments and share experiences. We hold free public webinars on key issues in open access publishing and open scholarship more broadly with leading speakers from around the world. Our membership criteria and published 'Principles of Transparency and Best Practice in Scholarly Publishing' reflect developments in scholarly communications. We have collaborated on the Think. Check. Submit. initiative to help identify quality and best practice in scholarly publishing. We launched the OA Switchboard to share OA publication information between funders, institutions and publishers.
