Mission & Goals

One Sea aims to promote the implementation and creation of the conditions needed for automated and autonomous maritime transport systems and to foster societal acceptance and confidence in such technology. One Sea's purpose is to support the development of the international legal framework needed to enable the implementation of new technologies in the maritime transport chain. The vision of One Sea is that technology will enable an optimized transport chain, enhancing safety, efficiency, and sustainability in maritime transport and improving the working conditions, well-being, and social welfare of seafarers. One Sea aims to align and harmonize the regulations and standards, interfaces and testing and approval regime necessary to deliver a safe, efficient, and commercially viable autonomous logistics system.

EU Legislative Interests

Legislative proposals or policies focusing on maritime/waterborne autonomy and maritime/waterborne digitalization. Also proposals regarding transport and logistics and the autonomy and digitalization thereof. One Sea is monitoring the development under https://transport.ec.europa.eu/transport-modes/maritime/maritime-autonomous-ships-and-shipping_en and contributing to any new endeveours that may arise in this conent. For the moment the One Sea - EU collaboration has been mainly within the context of development of the MASS Code at IMO. One Sea envisage more active work on standards in the coming years.

Communication Activities

One Sea prepares submissions related to EU maritime policies to support the development of the regulative frameworks, and actively engages in discussions on relevant media and foras. However, no specific campains nor publications on EU autonomous initiatives have been nessessary at this stage.

Additional Information

As an international NGO, One Sea cannot accept any governmental or institutional funding to maintain its non-governmental status. As a very small secretariat, the yearly budget is mainly consumed by staff salaries and travel expenses to international meetings, such as IMO, ISO and IEC. The work is mainly performed by the commercial members of the association.
