Mission & Goals
Oileán is an independent non-governmental organisation working to strengthen the capacity of island communities to engage effectively with national, regional, European, and international policy processes. The organisation’s core mission is to ensure that the perspectives and lived experiences of island communities are reflected in decision-making relating to climate action, sustainable development, resilience, regional policy, and economic transition. Oileán develops and delivers capacity-building programmes, policy briefings, research outputs, and stakeholder engagement initiatives designed to: • improve island participation in international policy forums • strengthen policy literacy and communications capacity among sub-national island jurisdictions • facilitate dialogue between island communities and decision-makers at EU and international level • support the development of evidence-based policy solutions tailored to geographically remote and env

Oileán’s activities relate to EU policy areas that affect island communities, particularly in the context of climate transition, regional cohesion, and sustainable development. Oileán undertakes a range of communication and engagement activities designed to facilitate dialogue between island communities and policy-makers, including: • policy briefings on EU legislative developments relevant to islands • webinars and workshops on climate policy engagement • stakeholder roundtables connecting island representatives with policy experts • publication of articles and analysis on climate resilience, sustainable development, and regional policy • training programmes supporting island leaders to engage in international climate diplomacy • use of social media platforms to share developments
