Mission & Goals
The NGO Shipbreaking Platform is a global coalition of human rights and environmental organisations working to ensure safe and environmentally sound ship dismantling world wide. The Platform has a strong focus on the practices of European ship owners and seeks to ensure effective European legislation on the issue.
EU Legislative Interests
The Platform is advocating for international and European legislation to effectively regulate the end-of-life management of ships, and has contributed to the development of the EU Ship Recycling Regulation (EU SRR) which was adopted in December 2013. Currently, the Platform focuses on the implementation of the EU SRR, including the set-up of the EU list of compliant ship recycling facilities, as well as identifying means to strengthen its impact. The Platform additionally monitors the enforcement of the EU Waste Shipment Regulation (EU WSR) for end-of-life ships, and seeks to understand how ship recycling can contribute to achieving a circular economy, especially how the recovery of marine scrap steel can be optimised and contribute to the decarbonisation of the steel and construction sectors.
Communication Activities
The Platform publishes "Platform News" and "Breaking News" on legislative and policy developments, as well as the practices of shipping companies globally. The "South Asia Quarterly Update" informs specifically about developments and on-the-ground realities at the three main destinations for end-of-life ships: India, Bangladesh and Pakistan. The Platform also publishes in-depth reports on topics including scrap steel, oil and gas decommissioning, human rights obligations, and which focus on conditions at shipbreaking yards globally. The Platform also organises events and debates with European policy makers and industry stakeholders on the implementation of the EU SRR and how to align EU ship recycling policies with the Circular Economy Action Plan.
