Mission & Goals
NewRetex’s mission is to enable a circular textile economy by turning post-consumer textile waste into high-quality, traceable resources for reuse and recycling. We operate and develop industrial-scale textile sorting systems, combining advanced sensor technology with deep textile expertise. Our core task is to transform mixed, discarded textiles into well-defined, data-backed material streams that can be reused, mechanically recycled, or chemically recycled. A key part of NewRetex’s role is data generation and transparency.
EU Legislative Interests
Key EU legislative proposals and policies relevant to our work NewRetex primarily works within the framework of the EU’s emerging legislation on textiles and waste, with particular focus on the transition to a circular textile economy. The most relevant EU policies and legislative initiatives include: EU Strategy for Sustainable and Circular Textiles Sets the overall direction for circularity, durability, reuse, recycling, and the reduction of textile waste across the EU. Waste Framework Directive (WFD) – mandatory separate collection of textiles (from 2025) Requires all Member States to implement separate collection systems for textiles, significantly increasing collected volumes and the need for efficient sorting infrastructure. Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) for textiles Establishes producer responsibility schemes to finance collection, sorting, reuse, and recycling of post-consumer textiles, increasing the demand for transparency and data. Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR) Introduces product-level requirements related to durability, recyclability, and recycled content, directly impacting textile design and material choices. Digital Product Passport (DPP) Enables digital traceability of textile products, supporting data-driven sorting, compliance, and material recovery. Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) (where relevant to textile packaging) Impacts packaging used in the textile value chain, including reuse and recycling requirements. Together, these policies drive the need for industrial-scale sorting, reliable material data, and traceability, which are core to NewRetex’s role in the European textile value chain.
Communication Activities
Communication activities (events, campaigns, publications, etc.) related to the above EU policies NewRetex operates a commercial textile sorting business in Denmark, where we receive and sort post-consumer textiles from approximately 30% of Danish municipalities. This operational platform underpins a range of communication and knowledge-sharing activities that support the implementation of EU textile and waste policies. Our activities include: Knowledge sharing and dialogue with municipalities and waste management companies Through collaborations, workshops, and professional meetings, we share practical experience and data on separate textile collection, sorting efficiency, and material flows in relation to the Waste Framework Directive and upcoming EPR schemes. Participation in conferences, industry events, and EU-related forums NewRetex contributes presentations and case studies based on Danish operational data, highlighting both opportunities and bottlenecks in the circular textile economy. Contributions to reports, analyses, and professional publications We provide data and insights from our sorting operations to support studies and projects linked to the EU Strategy for Sustainable and Circular Textiles and the development of data frameworks for the Digital Product Passport. Dialogue with brands, recyclers, and policymakers Through meetings and presentations, we communicate real-world insights on material quality, sorted composition, and recycling potential in relation to ESPR requirements and fiber-to-fiber recycling. Overall, NewRetex acts as a practical demonstration platform, translating EU textile policies into operational systems, data, and scalable solutions within the Danish textile value chain.
