Mission & Goals
NIMD is an international non-governmental organization, which supports democracy. The organization was established in 2000 by seven political parties from across the Dutch political spectrum, with the aim of supporting emerging democracies through a multiparty approach. With its global network of country offices and independent partners NIMD contributes to inclusive democracies by bringing politicians and society together in dialogue so that they can jointly formulate policies to improve their democratic system. We support political parties, individual politicians, and political institutions to bring democratic values into practice and enhance the overall political culture in their country. Given our mission to connect political parties and the people they represent, we increasingly target non-political actors in the political arena. Our work is centered around dialogue and trust building. Our intervention strategies are always aimed at bringing people together to collaborate.
EU Legislative Interests
Among others, our work is related to: - European Instrument for Democracy and Human Rights (EIDHR) - Updates to the EU Action Plan on Human Rights and Democracy - Updates to the European Democracy Action Plan - Team Europe Democracy (TED) Initiative - Next Multi-Annual Financial Framework (2028-2034)
Communication Activities
NIMD is not a lobby organisation; we do not actively organize events or campaigns, but publish knowledge products, evaluations and other publications to share our findings and experiences regarding the ways we support democracies worldwide. In many parts of the world our work is supported by the European Union. In that regard, NIMD visits staff working at EU institutions in Brussels and at EU Delegations, to report to them on these projects and to inform them on (social, political and other) developments in the countries in Africa, Asia, Europe and Latin America, where we work to strengthen democratic values and functioning of political, civic and state actors.

Organisation Members
Our Advisory Council members are in a position to keep NIMD informed of trends and opportunities, while promoting our work on a senior political level. Our continued ties with these parties, from across the political spectrum, help to cement our non-partisan credentials. These are the Christian Democratic Appeal (CDA), ChristianUnion (CU), Democrats 66 (D66), GreenLeft (GL), Labour Party (PvdA), Reformed Political Party (SGP), People’s Party for Freedom and Democracy (VVD). Apart from our country offices, we also work with partner organisations in the global South. These include the Institut pour la Gouvernance et la Démocratie - IGD (Benin), the Burundi Leadership Training Program (BLTP), the Gender Equality Network Myanmar (GEN), the Gender Action for Peace and Security (GAPS), the Institute for Multiparty Democracy - IMD (Mozambique), the Gorée Institute (Senegal), Akina Mama wa Africa – AMwA (Uganda) and the Centre des Études Méditerranéennes Internationales – CEMI (Tunisia). However, except for specific and time-bound contractual agreements, no structural legal affiliations exist between NIMD and these entities.
