Mission & Goals
We are Nesta. The UK’s innovation agency for social good. We confront challenges that affect millions of people, from inequality and ill-health to the climate crisis. We believe that innovation offers more potential now than ever before. We see opportunities to mobilise citizens and influence behaviour. Private and public capital that can be used more creatively. A wealth of data to mine. And so we draw on these rich resources by bringing together diverse teams. Data scientists, designers and behavioural scientists. Practitioners, academics, entrepreneurs and people with lived experience. Together, we design, test and scale new solutions to society’s biggest problems. We partner with frontline organisations, build new businesses and work to change whole systems. Harnessing the rigour of science and the creativity of design, we work relentlessly to put new ideas to the test. We'll keep going until we change millions of lives, for the better. The Nesta Trust: As outlined in note 14 (Financial Data), Nesta is primarily funded via the endowment of The Nesta Trust ("the Trust". Nesta is the trustee of the Trust, a charitable trust registered in England and Wales with charity number 1144683. The Trust exists to support Nesta in the achievement of its charitable objects which our stated https://www.nesta.org.uk/charitable-objects/ . Originally funded from a National Lottery endowment, the Trust was established on 1st April 2012 when Nesta became an independent charity. The Trust is guided by various Investment Principles but its primary objective is to fund Nesta’s activities. It does so by investing sustainably, aiming to generate a return that meets Nesta’s spending requirements. Further information can be found https://www.nesta.org.uk/nesta-trust/ Nesta ownership: As a company limited by guarantee (company no 07706036) and a registered charity (charity no 1144091) Nesta's organisation details can be verified at Companies House and the Charity Commission. Nesta's operations are overseen by a Board of Executive Directors all of whom are employees of Nesta. In turn, it is the Board of Trustees who are technically Nesta's members and its registered directors on Companies House. To be clear though, Nesta's Board of Trustees are not beneficial owners of Nesta - as a charity and a company limited by guarantee, there are no beneficial owners of Nesta. Nesta has a Board of independent Trustees which takes decisions on a majority basis - i.e. no one trustee has a controlling stake.
