Mission & Goals

NBIC ETHICS, a branch of NBIC WATCH, is dedicated to fostering legal frameworks and cultural practices that uphold human dignity and human rights, while promoting the emergence of a technological humanism. The rapid development of Nano-, Bio-, Information- and Cognitive (NBIC) technologies—such as brain–computer interfaces (BCI), DNA editing, and robotics/AI—raises profound ethical dilemmas. These challenges must be addressed at a meta-ethical level, prior to the establishment of norms, deontological principles, or computational ethics. NBIC ETHICS has contributed to the formulation of the EU’s AI Ethical Guidelines, the AI Act, the European Health Data Space, and the SoHO Regulation. In 2025, the revision of the Medical Devices Directive may have implications, as brain–computer interfaces could either be brought under its scope or be subject of a new directive. Similarly, the creation of biotechnology regulation and the Digital Services Act (DSA) revision will be under scrutiny.
