Mission & Goals

The National Electricity Company EAD (NEK EAD) is Bulgaria’s largest electricity generation and public supply company. Its core mission is to ensure the security, reliability, and sustainability of the country’s electricity supply by generating electricity primarily from hydro and pumped-storage hydropower plants, managing Bulgaria’s major water reservoirs, and participating in the wholesale electricity market. NEK EAD also coordinates balancing groups and acts as a supplier of last resort. As a state-owned enterprise, NEK supports Bulgaria’s national and EU energy and climate objectives, including decarbonization, energy storage, and cross-border infrastructure development. The company actively participates in EU-funded projects and cooperates with European institutions to modernize infrastructure and support energy transition.

Communication Activities

NEK EAD participates in EU-funded project dissemination, stakeholder briefings, and joint communication with partners on energy infrastructure, climate resilience, and sustainability. Communication efforts include technical presentations at EU energy forums, public consultations, and national events aligned with the TEN-E Regulation, the Renewable Energy Directive, and the Green Deal. NEK also prepares reports, press releases, and project updates in coordination with institutions like CINEA and EIB.
