Mission & Goals

Monaci Digitali APS promotes digital innovation and sustainable development in rural Southern Italy. Operating from the UNESCO-listed Certosa di Padula monastery, we create an innovative ecosystem for startups, digital transformation, and territorial regeneration. Our goals include: fostering entrepreneurship through incubation programs; bridging the digital divide via training and connectivity solutions; supporting green and digital transitions in internal areas; attracting talent back to rural territories; promoting sustainable tourism through technology. We manage digital innovation hubs, organize AI-focused hackathons, deliver training on emerging technologies for public administrations and entrepreneurs, and support cleantech/greentech startups. Recognized as a Startup Village by the European Commission (2025), we demonstrate how rural areas can become innovation hubs. EVENTS AND NETWORKING INITIATIVES AI-CKATHON Series Proprietary hackathon format focused on artificial intelligence and emerging technologies, organized regularly at our UNESCO-listed Certosa di Padula hub. These events bring together entrepreneurs, developers, students, and investors to develop innovative solutions aligned with EU Digital Decade objectives. Over 28 innovative projects have been generated through these initiatives, with participants from across Italy and international attendees. Certosa Village Program Ongoing initiative hosting digital nomads, remote workers, and tech professionals in a historic monastery setting, promoting sustainable work models and territorial regeneration. The program includes workshops, networking sessions, and cultural activities that showcase how rural areas can attract talent while preserving heritage, directly supporting EU Smart Villages concepts. Training Programs and Workshops Regular courses and workshops delivered to public administration officials, entrepreneurs, and citizens on: - Artificial Intelligence applications for public services and business innovation - Digital transformation strategies for rural territories - Sustainable technologies and green transition tools - Startup creation and business model development - Digital skills for employment and entrepreneurship Partnership Events Collaborative events with universities, research centers, local authorities, and corporate partners (including Huawei for connectivity solutions) to promote knowledge exchange and best practices on rural innovation and digital transformation. PUBLICATIONS AND MEDIA COVERAGE Our work has been featured in major Italian national media outlets including RAI (public broadcasting), La Repubblica, and Corriere della Sera, helping raise awareness about rural innovation potential and EU policy implementation in peripheral areas. We maintain active digital communication through our website (aps.valloweb.com) and social media channels, sharing updates on projects, success stories, policy developments, and opportunities for stakeholders interested in rural innovation. INSTITUTIONAL ENGAGEMENT Startup Village Recognition (2025) Official recognition by the European Commission as a Startup Village, participating in the Startup Village Forum and connecting with European rural innovation networks. This includes presentations at EU events, contribution to policy discussions, and knowledge sharing with other rural innovation hubs across Europe. Collaboration with Local Authorities Ongoing partnership with Vallo di Diano Mountain Community and local municipalities to implement EU-funded projects and translate European policies into territorial development strategies. This includes co-organizing public consultations, information sessions on EU funding opportunities, and capacity-building initiatives for public officials. Network Participation Active engagement with European networks focused on rural development, smart villages, startup ecosystems, and territorial innovation, facilitating peer learning and policy dialogue between local practitioners and EU institutions. ADVOCACY AND AWARENESS RAISING We regularly communicate about EU policies relevant to our mission, explaining their practical implications for rural communities and demonstrating through concrete examples how European initiatives can generate local impact. Our role as a bridge between EU policy frameworks and grassroots implementation helps make European priorities tangible and accessible to citizens, entrepreneurs, and local administrations in rural areas. All our communication activities emphasize the alignment between our local actions and broader EU objectives, showcasing how rural territories can be protagonists rather than passive beneficiaries of European integration and development policies.
