Mission & Goals

The Middle East Democracy Center (MEDC) is a U.S.-based nonprofit and nonpartisan advocacy organization that works with the people of the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) to challenge authoritarian governance, free the unjustly detained, and advocate for a more accountable U.S. foreign policy toward the region that respects and protects human rights. MEDC was founded in 2024, following a merger of the Project on Middle East Democracy and the Freedom Initiative–two organizations with more than 25 years of combined efforts to support democratic freedoms in the MENA region. The merger arose at an inflection point of rising authoritarianism, deadly conflicts, and human rights violations across the region. We work within this context to expose abuses and advocate for policies that aim to blunt authoritarian action against democratic actors; campaign to free the unjustly detained; and help give voice and provide space to activists from the region to strategize and articulate future vision
