Mission & Goals

Meat and Livestock Australia’s (MLA) mission is to collaborate with red meat industry (beef, sheepmeat, goatmeat) stakeholders to invest in research, development, and marketing initiatives that contribute to producer profitability, sustainability, and global competitiveness. As a not for profit Rural Research and Development Corporation, MLA’s remit includes delivering world-leading outcomes in climate resilience, biosecurity, and digital innovation. Under Strategic Plan 2030, MLA’s core objective is to optimize demand by expanding high-value markets and creating value across the supply chain. This includes a key initiative to defend and improve economic market access by working with industry and government to expand trade access by tackling tariffs, quotas, and technical trade disruptions. MLA further supports the industry’s path to sustainability and Australia’s net-zero ambitions.

Communication Activities

MLA has had limited communication activities in recent years on the above EU legislative proposals and policies. In the past, the MLA has organised events together with an intermediary to increase MLA’s profile ahead of meetings with policymakers. Nevertheless, there have not been any recent campaigns, publications or events organised by the MLA.

MLA's members include beef, sheepmeat and goatmeat farmers. MLA membership is voluntary and free. Total MLA membership at 19 June 2025 was 50,633 farmers.
