Mission & Goals
Mastodon develops privacy-preserving and open-source social networking technology. This technology has been adopted by the European Commission or the Federal State of Germany. Contrary to many commercial social media companies such as Meta or X, Mastodon is financed mainly by community donations and EU grants and not with an advertisement business model. It is therefore of high importance to promote Mastodon's interests to EU policy makers and officials, to promote a safer, healthier, more transparent, and less privacy-invasive social media environment.

1) NLnet community 2) Mastodon Inc. is currently the 100% shareholder of Mastodon GmbH. Mastodon Inc. is a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt non-profit organisation. It has no shareholders or any other Ultimate Beneficially Owners (UBOs). Please note that the "Mastodon Group" is currently in the process to restructure to a EU non-profit holding structure in form of a Belgian AISBL non-profit entity. We estimate this process to be completed by end of Q2 2026.
