Mission & Goals

MARQUES is the European association representing the interest of brand owners. It was established in 1986 and is incorporated in the UK as a not-for-profit company limited by guarantee. MARQUES currently has a total of more than 800 member companies or firms, including the owners of many of the best-known brands in the world covering a wide range of industry sectors. Apart from corporate members owning brands, the membership is also made up of IP professionals and others with an interest in brand management and protection. There are members from more than 80 countries worldwide, including the 27 Member States of the EU and the UK.

Communication Activities

MARQUES regularly informs its members about events, initiatives, studies and other activities relevant to EU policies. This is done via the MARQUES monthly newsletter, the HouseMARQUES, as well as via the Class 46 and Class 99 blogs. In addition to this regular activity, on the occasion of its Annual Conferences or mid-term events organised for the membership, MARQUES offers informative sessions to provide updates on legislative changes in the national/EU IP landscapes, as well as on adopted new EU policies which address the protection and enforcement of IPRs.

Member Of

MARQUES is participating in the activities of a number of unofficial networks of kindred IP organisations, the common goal of which is to share best practices, and contribute to collaborative initiatives, in order to promote a fair and balanced protection of IPRs, and to educate the users of the IPR protection and enforcement systems in Europe and beyond. There are no implications triggered from the participation to this type of informal network activities, including financially and in terms of any obligations for the MARQUES management and membership.

Additional Information

The role covered by the paid consultant, namely, the External Relations Officer, does not correspond to a intermediary role by contract, in relation to the activities pertinent to the Transparency Register. The paid consultant is in charge of, among others, also coordinating the activities of the Association in relation to the Transparency Register, but in the context of a general contract that has a number of other different task components. Upon request, the External Relations Officer provides advice on relevant subject matters, supports the preparation of statements and position papers with the support of members selected by the Association case-by-case, and is entrusted by the Association to deal with the external relations and the contacts with institutions, IP Offices and the like, thus including with the European Commission.
