Mission & Goals

As established by Article 43 of the Common Fisheries Policy Regulation, the Market Advisory Council (MAC) is a stakeholder-led organisation composed of representatives of the entire fisheries and aquaculture value chain (primary producers, processors, traders, suppliers, retailers, trade unions) and other interest groups (environmental and development NGOs, consumer groups), which provides advice to the European Commission and EU Member States on matters relevant for the market of fishery and aquaculture products.

EU Legislative Interests

Besides the role foreseen in Article 43 of the Common Fisheries Policy Regulation (recommendations and suggestions on matters relating to the management of fisheries and the socio-economic and conservation aspects of fisheries and aquaculture), the Market Advisory Council (MAC) also engages in interest representation activities targeting the following legislative proposals and policies: - Common Market Organisation of Fishery and Aquaculture Products (e.g., consumer information rules, framework for Producer Organisations) - Trade (Community Customs Code, Free Trade Agreements, General System of Preferences, Economic Partnership Agreements, Autonomous Tariff Quotas, etc.) - Fight against Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated Fishing (e.g., ongoing identification procedures against third countries, implementation of the IUU Regulation, implementation of the Fisheries Control Regulation) - Food information to consumers (e.g., Food Information to Consumers Regulation) - Environmental, social, and economic sustainability (e.g., development of indicators for the fisheries and aquaculture sector by STECF, Regulation on banning forced labour in the market) - Overarching fisheries and aquaculture policies (e.g., evaluation of the Common Fisheries Policy, European Oceans Pact, 2040 Vision for Fisheries, EU Strategy for External Fisheries Action)
