Mission & Goals
Manganese Metal Company (MMC) is a world leading producer of high-purity electrolytic manganese metal and is actively developing high-purity manganese sulphate monohydrate (HP MSM) for use in lithium-ion batteries. MMC supports the global energy transition by ensuring a reliable and sustainable supply of manganese-based battery materials. The company’s goals include promoting responsible mineral beneficiation in South Africa, advancing local value addition, and contributing to the resilience and diversification of international battery supply chains. MMC engages with stakeholders across the battery and electric vehicle industries to support policy, trade, and market development efforts aligned with these objectives.
EU Legislative Interests
MMC’s engagement focuses on EU policies and legislative initiatives that impact the battery value chain, critical raw materials, and strategic trade relations. Key areas of interest include: The EU Battery Regulation (Regulation (EU) 2023/1542), particularly provisions related to battery sustainability, responsible sourcing, and carbon footprint reporting; The Critical Raw Materials Act (CRMA), supporting efforts to strengthen EU access to strategic battery materials such as high-purity manganese; The EU Green Deal and related initiatives advancing electrification, clean energy, and circular economy principles; Trade policy instruments, such as the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) and bilateral trade agreements, including trade relations between the EU and the United States under the TTC (Trade and Technology Council). MMC seeks to contribute to a resilient and transparent supply chain for battery-grade manganese while supporting policy frameworks that incentivize sustainable, non-Chinese mineral supply.
