Mission & Goals
We are a powerful voice for UK manufacturers; championing growth and innovation. Through our campaigning, sector expertise, leading business services, apprenticeship training and extensive network we have been supporting companies from around the UK of all sizes for more than 130 years. We help everyone from fearless start-ups to industry titans thrive and build for the future. We provide deep expertise in the areas that matter to the manufacturing sector and bring together a collaborative network of members in regional and national communities.
EU Legislative Interests
Make UK works with the EU Parliament, Commission and Council to create a business-focused and effective relationship between the UK and the EU. In addition, Make UK follows key policy developments and proposals to ensure that concerns of the manufacturing sector are known to policy makers. We monitor changes to the EU's legislative environment to ensure that potential business impacts to manufacturers, their supply chains and customers are known and advised. As part of our engagement we hold meetings with officials from EU Member State governments, with officials at the EU Mission to the UK, members and staff of the European Parliament, officials and staff of the European Commission and other European stakeholders. We undertake engagement and policy discussions with the UK government in preparation and dialogue with the institutions of the European Union. Key focus and examples of policy files that are under previous, current and future mandates: + UK EU Relationship Implementation of the EU UK Trade and Cooperation Agreement (TCA) including engagement with bodies established by the TCA such as the EU-UK Parliamentary Partnership Assembly, Specialised Trade Committees and UK and EU Domestic Advisory Groups. In view of the UK - EU summit (May 2025), both sides explored areas with the potential to strengthen bilateral cooperation between the EU and UK. This Common Understanding sets out the conclusions of those exploratory talks which require our monitoring, engagement and participation through appropriate channels. + Competitiveness - Competitiveness Compass: framework to increase EU competitiveness - Omnibus: measures to reduce administrative procedures and reporting requirements - Clean Industrial Deal: measures to lower energy costs and promote clean technologies + Trade - Union Customs Code: streamline & modernise EU customs processes - EU-US trade: to confirm revised bi-lateral market access & tariff treatments - VAT in the digital age: implementation of VAT admin reform measures - Introduction of EU Entry/Exit System (EES) - Introduction of European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS) + Employment and Social policy. - Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive: revisions to the introduction of the legislation - Voluntary reporting on standard for SME's: value chain cap to the CSRD. - Initiatives on Traineeships - Subcontracting: draft proposals on subcontracting chains and the role of intermediaries in order to protect workers’ rights - Just Transitioning: own initiative report - Regulation on Prohibiting Products Made with Forced Labour on the Union Market: phased implementation & reporting - other files: EWC and Traineeships Directive; eDeclaration; Right to disconnect and telework + Climate, Energy and Environment policy - Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR); phased intro of new rules on packaging materials and removal of single use plastics - Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism; intro of financial charges on EU imports from Jan. 2026 - Green Claims Directive: rules on environmental claims and product labels - Recast of taxation of energy products and electricity Directive - Deforestation Regulation (EUDR); intro of the regulation’s key obligations from 30 December 2025. + Health & Safety policy - Machinery Regulation: revisions to the safety requirements for a broad range of machinery products from 2027 - EU Health & Safety Strategic Framework 2021-2027 - Protection of workers from the risks related to exposure to asbestos at work + Industrial, digital & innovation policy - Artificial Intelligence Act (AI Act): rules on prohibited AI systems, high-risk and governance frameworks and penalties - Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR): regulation enables the establishment of performance and information requirements
Communication Activities
Make UK in support of our membership and association with CEEMET and British Chamber of Commerce EU & Belgium, we contribute to events and receptions in Brussels/Strasbourg focused on engaging with the European Parliament, Commission and Council on key legislative and strategic policies as well as the development of the UK EU relationship. We help arrange, support and participate with events including: briefings/roundtable with MEP's across relevant policy files and on UK-EU relations; briefings with EU Commission officials on topical files; Uk and EU policy updates with EU Delegation to the UK and Member State diplomatic representatives to the UK; delegations of member companies to the EU Commission and Parliament. Make UK is a member with the following two organisations, who are headquartered in Brussels. CEEMET The Council of European Employers of the Metal, Engineering and Technology-Based Industries (CEEMET) is the European employer organisation representing the interests of the metal, engineering and technology-based industries. It has a particular focus on social policy and industrial relations issues. CEEMET was created in 1962 as the Western European Metal Trades Employers’ Organisation (WEM) and was renamed CEEMET in 2004. CEEMET’s member federations represent businesses across Europe, the majority of which are small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). CEEMET members are active in a large number of sectors, including basic metals, fabricated metal goods, machinery and equipment, office machinery and computers, radio, television and communication equipment, medical, precision and optical instruments, watches and clocks, motor vehicles and trailers, and transport. Some of its member federations are also active in the iron and steel industries. https://ceemet.org/about British Chamber of Commerce EU & Belgium BritCham EU is part of the British Chamber of Commerce EU & Belgium and it focusses on all matters concerning EU policy and the relationship between the UK and the EU. The organisation promotes the importance of fair and open business in Europe and aims to help influence policies which facilitate and support businesses both in the EU and in the UK to thrive and succeed in this context.
