EU Legislative Interests
1) Horizon 2020 Programme (especially the Excellent Science pillar including the European Research Council); 2) Horizon Europe (especially the Excellent Science pillar including the European Research Council) 3) 2028–2034 EU Framework Programme for Research and Innovation (FP10) (especially the Excellent Science pillar including the European Research Council)
Communication Activities
As part of the MTA200 celebration event series spanning the entire year - commemorating the 200th anniversary of the founding of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences -, two events can be singled out as dedicated to EU research policies. A SAPEA workshop organised by ALLEA and MTA took place on 4 November 2025, under the title "Upholding Integrity in Scientific Advice: Key Principles and Challenges". (link to the news coverage: https://mta.hu/english/sapea-panel-discussion-at-mta200-upholding-integrity-in-scientific-advice-key-principles-and-challenges-114890 ). The panel was moderated by Professor Maura Hiney, Adjunct Professor of Research at University College Dublin, and the panel included Ana Marusic, Professor at the University of Split School of Medicine, Peter Lund, Professor Emeritus at Aalto University, Markus Prutsch, Associate Professor at Heidelberg University, and David Budtz Pedersen, Professor of Science Communication and Impact Studies at Aalborg University as panellists. Another event, the symposium “From Barriers to Bridges: Towards a More Cohesive European Research Area” saw a high-level dialogue organised by Academia Europaea Budapest Knowledge Hub on 5 November 2025. The AE Budapest Knowledge Hub is hosted by the Secretariat of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. At this event, plenary speakers discussed what is to be expected in terms of challenges for the 2028–2034 EU Framework Programme for Research and Innovation. The speakers' list included among others Joerg Niehoff, Deputy Head of Unit of the European Research Area (European Commission, DG Research & Innovation) and Lidia Borrell-Damián, Secretary General of Science Europe. The plenary part was followed by a panel discussion, where Péter Hegyi, Director of the Academia Europaea (AE) Budapest Knowledge Hub, provided some opening remarks on how a more cohesive European Research Area can be achieved. A major strand of this mission is "Curiosity to Career", which aims to guide secondary-school students towards scientific paths by giving them hands-on experience in laboratories and structured follow-up programmes. The initiative now reaches thousands of students through events in fields such as biomedical sciences and chemistry. Large gatherings – from the recent 1,700-student meeting in Szeged to an upcoming science fair expecting 4,000 attendees – underline the programme’s momentum, as does the participation of Ferenc Krausz, a Nobel prize winner. Organisation Members
The MTA as a "public association" has approx. 17 thousand members (natural persons) (organized in 11 scientific sections), and until 31 August 2019 MTA had run its own research network comprising 10 research centres, 5 research institutes, and approx. 140 research groups at Hungarian universities and other public institutions. Following the restructuring of the research network of MTA and the launch of operations within the new framework on 1 September 2019, MTA has retained certain quality assessment duties concerning the entities of its former research network. In particular, in 2022 MTA established the title "MTA Centre of Excellence", which it granted to research institutions all over Hungary which had submitted a successful application to an open call for this title.
