Mission & Goals

The Macau European Chamber of Commerce was founded in 2013 in the presence of Dr. José Manuel Durão Barroso, President of the European Commission (2004 - 2014). MECC is the first affiliation of European Chambers in Macau which aims to promote commercial, industrial, financial, scientific, and other economic exchanges of all types between Macau and Europe, as well as to foster bilateral cooperation among the business communities, thereby helping diversify Macau’s economy. We also serve as a platform of communication for Members to express their interests and coordinate with each other. MECC was founded by six European chambers of commerce in Macau, namely France, Germany, Ireland, Portugal, Romaniaand the United Kingdom, whereas Instituto de Promoção do Comércio e do Investimento de Macau and Institute of European Studies of Macau are the Honorary members. Other members consist of organisations such as the Austrian Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong and Macau.

EU Legislative Interests

The Macau European Chamber of Commerce unites European businesses in Macau in joint efforts to influence trade rule and regulation improvements in the interest of European businesses. As a business Chamber, MECC is mostly devoted to follow the trade and economic relationships of Macau SAR with EU and European business as operating worldwide. Thus, the focus of our attention would be: i) trade agreements between Macau, EU and mainland China; ii) any legislation adopted within EU that could affect, impair or improve international trade, in particular with Greater China (including mainland China, HK, Macau and Taiwan); iii) any international agreement to which EU becomes a party that could affect, impair or improve international trade, in particular with Greater China; iv) any regular meetings or summits, in particular with a focus on trade or investment, with Macau, Hong Kong and mainland China; v) any legislation adopted within EU or any international agreement enacted by EU that could affect, impair or improve investment from Europe in greater china and vice-versa.

Communication Activities

The Macau European Chamber of Commerce published, together with the Institute of the European Studies of Macau a Report on the role of European Union in stimulating Macau’s development in 2017. It took European Union’s current growth strategy – Europe 2020 - in terms of innovation and urban planning, to relate with Macau’s Five-Year Plan, along with suggestions from the local Macau business community, hence, providing some suggestions of supportive measures and strategies for stimulating Macau’s development and economic diversification.
