Mission & Goals

Established in November 2019, Lungs Europe is a Brussels-based organisation which is an official partnership between the European Lung Foundation (ELF) and the European Respiratory Society (ERS). Lungs Europe will play a significant role in EU funding programmes and projects related to respiratory health and disease. Our mission is to ensure key messages of the EU and European policy reach all key stakeholders, including the ELF and ERS networks of healthcare professionals and patients, patient associations and the public. Lung Europe’s activities will raise the profile of respiratory issues and promote lung health for all. We will create a hub for advocating for funding, identifying opportunities, supporting applications, and project management, stakeholder engagement and communications in EU projects.

Communication Activities

An example of such activities is a Lungs Europe campaign called Healthy Lungs for Life (HLfL). It is a global public awareness campaign, that teaches thousands of people each year about how to make changes in their life to positively impact their lung health and the lung health of other people. The campaign currently focuses on five key themes: Physical activity (#TakeTheActiveOption); Air quality (#BreatheCleanAir); Stopping smoking (#BeSmokeFree); Vaccination (#Vaccinate); and Climate change (#FightClimateChange). Through these topics, Lungs Europe is able to address key EU policy areas - including the promotion of vaccinations, AMR, smoking cessation and lifestyle changes to help prevent NCDs, and promoting decarbonisation and addressing the serious impact climate change is having on health. Organising events on priorities around respiratory health (e.g. lung health promotion and disease prevention; lung cancer; access to treatment and medecines; respiratory infections and AMR etc) under the MEP Lung Health Group, which is an informal platform for policymakers, health professionals and patients to identify the potential EU policy measures aimed at improving lung health. https://www.ersnet.org/advocacy/mep-lung-health-group/ Events, publications and other activities under EU-funded projects addressing such topics as NCD prevention, cancer screening, tobacco control etc. https://europeanlung.org/lungseurope/projects-and-campaigns/
