Mission & Goals
The Expert Group works to raise awareness of the challenges faced by people with prostate cancer in Europe and brings together EU level stakeholders with a shared interest in promoting policy change, education and awareness to ensure that people with prostate cancer, and particularly those with advanced prostate cancer, receive the right treatment and care at the right time in a shared decision-making process between patients and medical professionals. The LTPC Expert group also focuses on issues surrounding mental health of patients diagnosed with prostate cancer, as well as caregivers and family members. Additionally, the Expert Group has conducted work on healthy living and other related factors that contribute to better quality of life of patients with prostate cancer.
EU Legislative Interests
The LTPC Expert Group focuses on healthcare-related policy files, with a particular emphasis on cancer and prostate cancer initiatives, including the EU Beating Cancer Plan and the Council Recommendation on Cancer Screening. The Group’s activities primarily centre on awareness-raising and advocacy in support of pilot cancer screening programmes. In this context, the Group typically advocates for increased public funding to enable the development and implementation of such programmes. While these pilot programmes are designed and implemented at national level, the Group engages at EU level to highlight their public health value and promote policy alignment. In addition, the LTPC Expert Group monitors other EU legislative and policy initiatives that may have a direct or indirect impact on cancer screening and early detection. These include, inter alia, the Medical Devices Regulation, the EU Innovation Act, the EU Biotech Act, as well as potential future initiatives related to healthy ageing.
Communication Activities
The LTPC Expert Group is chaired by Members of the European Parliament acting as Patrons. In the current year, these are MEP Romana Jerković, MEP Laurent Castillo, and MEP András Kulja. The MEP Patrons support the LTPC Expert Group by facilitating the organisation of events at the European Parliament and by providing political endorsements, including quotations, for studies and policy recommendations developed by the Group. In addition, the LTPC Expert Group engages with EU institutions as part of its advocacy activities. This includes outreach to the European Commission, in particular DG SANTE, in the context of advocating for increased funding for pilot prostate cancer screening programmes. The Group also engages with the Council of the European Union, most recently through exchanges with the Irish Permanent Representation, to discuss priorities of the Irish Council Presidency.
