Mission & Goals

NCRI works for human rights and democracy in Iran. It has been working closely with many MEPs in the past 20 years particularly with members who have been active with the informal inter-group Friends of a Free Iran. NCRI has been also working with many parliaments in different European countries and in the UN. NCRI's Brussels office (CNRI-BXL) is the liaison for contacts with European Parliament and EU institutions.

EU Legislative Interests

EU's relations with Iran. We aim to shed light on and expose human rights violations in Iran and the spreading of Islamic Fundamentalism by the regime to the rest of the region. We advocate for EU's relations with Iran to be conditioned to the improvement of human rights and the abolition of death penalty. In recent years we helped campaign for the adoption of the following EP resolutions with regard to Iran: European Parliament resolution of 19 June 2025 on the case of Dr Ahmadreza Djalali in Iran (June 2025) https://www.europarl.europa.eu/doceo/document/TA-10-2025-0133_EN.html Execution spree in Iran and the confirmation of the death sentences of activists Behrouz Ehsani and Mehdi Hassani (April 2025) https://www.europarl.europa.eu/doceo/document/TA-10-2025-0062_EN.html Systematic repression of human rights in Iran, notably the cases of Pakhshan Azizi and Wrisha Moradi, and the taking of EU citizens as hostages (Jan 2025) https://www.europarl.europa.eu/doceo/document/TA-10-2025-0004_EN.html Condemnd Iran regime's agressions in the region and push for IRGC Terror listing - April 2024: https://www.europarl.europa.eu/doceo/document/TA-9-2024-0382_EN.html Increased number of executions in Iran, in particular the case of Mohammad Ghobadlou - 8 Feb 2024 https://www.europarl.europa.eu/doceo/document/TA-9-2024-0071_EN.html Latest attacks against women and women's rights defenders in Iran, and Iran's arbitrary detention of EU nationals - 23 November 2023 https://www.europarl.europa.eu/doceo/document/TA-9-2023-0429_EN.html EU response to the protests and executions in Iran https://www.europarl.europa.eu/doceo/document/TA-9-2023-0016_EN.html - with a specific request to put Iran's IRGC on the EU terrorist list Iran: in particular the poisoning of hundreds of schoolgirls https://www.europarl.europa.eu/doceo/document/TA-9-2023-0083_EN.html We promoted the Iranian women's struggle which led to the winning of the Sakharov prize to the Iranian Women Protest Movment https://www.europarl.europa.eu/news/en/press-room/20231013IPR07134/jina-mahsa-amini-and-iranian-women-protest-movement-win-the-2023-sakharov-prize We also focused on the EU-Iran nuclear negotiations or The Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA); https://eeas.europa.eu/archives/ashton/media/statements/docs/2013/131219_02_en.pdf where we urged MEPs to point to the fact that EU’s agreements with Iran must also include human rights and Iranian Government’s involvement with international terrorism. We were also active in pushing for the subsequent activation of the “snapback” mechanism in September 2025, following Iran’s non-cooperation with the JCPOA.

Additional Information

CNRI-BXL operation costs are very low, since it is based on voluntarily participation of human rights activists and victims of the Iranian regime, who strive for a free Iran. We don't have any employed staff. All our members and activists work as volunteers based on their availability and they pay for their own travel and food expenses. We share an office room at a building rented by other NGOs.
