Mission & Goals

Law and Democracy Support Foundation e.V. (LDSF) is a Berlin-based civil society organization, founded in exile in 2022 by 7 Egyptian human rights defenders with the support of People in Need. It is the continuation of the Egyptian Group for Legal Support, which was forcibly shut down in Egypt after years of defending freedom of expression cases — including the detention of photojournalist Mahmoud Shawkan and the September 2019 protests — and training young lawyers in human rights defense. LDSF works to promote the rule of law, democratic institutions, and the protection of human rights defenders at risk. Its mission includes defending: Freedom of expression and access to information The right to political participation Safe and open internet use The right to a fair and impartial trial Protection for human rights defenders at risk

EU Legislative Interests

"Our organisation focuses on EU policies and legislative initiatives related to human rights, democracy, and the rule of law. We engage with measures addressing transnational repression, protection of fundamental freedoms, and safeguarding civic space within and beyond EU borders. Specifically, we follow and contribute to discussions on the EU Action Plan on Human Rights and Democracy, the European Magnitsky-style sanctions regime, and initiatives to strengthen protection for human rights defenders at risk. We also monitor policies on freedom of expression, digital rights, and the EU’s external action instruments, including the Global Human Rights Sanctions Regime and mechanisms supporting civil society resilience."

Communication Activities

"Our organisation has organised and participated in policy dialogues and advocacy events addressing transnational repression and human rights within EU frameworks. We publish analytical briefs and reports on freedom of expression and civic space, and share recommendations with EU institutions. Communication activities include campaigns highlighting risks faced by exiled human rights defenders and contributions to consultations on EU human rights and democracy policies."
