Mission & Goals

The Latvian Football Federation (Latvijas Futbola federācija – LFF) is the national governing body of football in Latvia and a full member of FIFA and UEFA. LFF is responsible for the development, regulation and administration of football at all levels in the country. Its remit includes organizing national competitions such as the Optibet Virslīga, First League, Second League and youth and grassroots championships, as well as the Latvian Football Cup. The federation manages the Latvian men’s and women’s national teams and oversees coach education, referee training, club licensing, talent development and football infrastructure. LFF also implements UEFA and FIFA programmes, supports social inclusion and grassroots initiatives, and cooperates with European and international partners to promote the growth, integrity and sustainability of football in Latvia.

EU Legislative Interests

The Latvian Football Federation actively follows and contributes to the development of European Union sports policy and related strategic initiatives. The organisation is particularly interested in the implementation of the EU Work Plan for Sport, the role of sport in promoting European values, social inclusion, equal opportunities and active citizenship, as well as the contribution of sport to public health, education and social cohesion. The Federation monitors and, where relevant, engages in EU-level initiatives related to grassroots sport development, dual career pathways for athletes, safeguarding and child protection in sport, integrity in sport, fight against match-fixing, violence and corruption, good governance, and transparency of sports organisations. A key area of interest is European Union funding and cooperation instruments, in particular Erasmus+ Sport, Interreg, Creative Europe, Horizon Europe and other EU programmes supporting innovation, digitalisation and sustainability in the sports sector. The Federation is involved in the implementation and coordination of transnational EU-funded projects focused on education, innovation, inclusion, gender equality, digital transformation and environmentally sustainable practices in sport. The organisation also follows EU policies and legislative initiatives related to digitalisation of sport governance, data protection, integrity of competitions, sustainability of sport infrastructure, green transition of sport facilities and events, and the role of sport in achieving EU strategic objectives in the areas of youth policy, education, health and social development. Communication Activities

The Latvian Football Federation carries out a wide range of communication and dissemination activities related to EU sports policy and European initiatives. These include the organisation and implementation of conferences, workshops, seminars, training sessions and public events linked to European Union priorities in the field of sport, education, youth and social inclusion. The Federation actively communicates the results of EU-funded projects, in particular Erasmus+ Sport, Interreg and other transnational cooperation projects, through its official website, social media channels, newsletters and media relations. It regularly produces publications, guidelines, educational materials, reports and digital content promoting European values, fair play, equality, integrity, inclusion and healthy lifestyles through sport. In addition, the Federation participates in and promotes UEFA and European football-related initiatives, awareness-raising campaigns and communication actions addressing anti-discrimination, respect, diversity, safeguarding, good governance and integrity in sport. Matchday campaigns, grassroots events, youth tournaments and public information actions are used to engage athletes, coaches, volunteers, supporters and the wider public. The organisation also contributes to European policy dialogue by organising and participating in stakeholder events, panel discussions and networking activities at national and European level, promoting EU strategies and initiatives in the sport sector.
