Mission & Goals
The Large-scale Artificial Intelligence Open Network (LAION), a non-profit research organization, was founded in Hamburg, Germany, in 2021. It brings together various research labs, machine learning experts, and enthusiasts from around the world who are committed to the principles of open science and open-source. This commitment is aimed at democratizing basic machine learning and AI research, especially on the scales necessary for studying the strong capabilities of foundation models and the datasets required for their training, eg enabling fully reproducible scaling laws for various foundation models. Since its inception, LAION has conducted high-quality, strongly impacting, and reproducible research, open-sourcing its outcomes for reuse and enhancement by a broad scientific and technological community. The work performed by LAION has led to prestigious recognitions, including the NeurIPS Outstanding Paper Award in 2022 and the Falling Walls Scientific Breakthrough Award in 2023.
