EU Legislative Interests

European Green Deal (2019) A comprehensive growth strategy to make the EU climate-neutral by 2050. Covers energy, industry, transport, agriculture, and biodiversity. European Climate Law (2021) Legally binds the EU to achieve climate neutrality by 2050. Sets a net greenhouse gas emissions reduction target of at least 55% by 2030 (compared to 1990 levels). Circular Economy Action Plan (2020) Part of the Green Deal; aims to transition to a sustainable economy. Key focus areas: Sustainable product policy – making products more durable, repairable, and recyclable. Right to Repair – promoting consumer access to repairs and spare parts. Waste prevention and management – targets for reducing waste and improving recycling. Eco-design for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR) (Proposal: 2022) Replaces the old Ecodesign Directive. Expands beyond energy-related products to include textiles, furniture, electronics, and more. Introduces digital product passports and sustainability requirements. Waste Framework Directive Revision (Ongoing – 2023 Proposal) Focuses on textile and food waste. Proposes extended producer responsibility (EPR) for textiles. Aims to reduce food waste by 30% by 2030 (compared to 2020). Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) (Proposal: 2022) Sets targets for packaging reuse, recyclability, and reduction. Harmonizes packaging labeling and restricts certain single-use formats.

Communication Activities

Donation of over 2,000 used toys to charities, collected by the KyklOIKOdromio. Participation in information and awareness environmental workshops. Engagement of 10 volunteers. Participation in festivals with interactive environmental activities for children Participation in the Let's do it Cyprus clean-up campaign for 3 consecutive years. A series of three workshops on "Reduce-Reuse-Recycle" were organised. Through this interactive workshop, participants learned how to separate their daily waste, what are the recycling practices followed in Cyprus, and how our daily habits can protect the environment. "Circular for All" online platform: The "Online Platform" for exchanging, buying, selling and donating used items, "Circular for all" (www.circularforall.org) is a single online platform, designed with the mission to connect people who wish to exchange, sell, buy, donate or repair used items in an easy, safe and sustainable way but also as a means where one can find small businesses that provide repair/repair services. Library of Things and online shop The first "Library of Things" in Cyprus was created and is operated voluntarily by KyklOIKOdromio at 16-18 Liasidou Street within the walls of Nicosia (www.circularlibraryforall.org). The "Library of Things" is a collection of objects where a member of the local community can borrow objects that are used occasionally such as tools, gardening or hobby equipment, musical instruments etc. All items from the library collection are picked up and returned to the library during library hours. This is a concept that encourages sharing and sustainability by providing access to a wide range of items that people may only need occasionally. The concept aims to reduce consumption, promote collaborative consumption, and build a sense of community. It is based on the principle of "lending rather than buying" and helps to reduce environmental impact. Awareness-raising action in schools on the Principles of the Circular Economy and the UN Sustainable Development Goals: The aim of the action is to raise awareness among students and the local community about the basic principles of the circular economy and the UN's sustainable development goals. The aim of the action is for teachers to become familiar with the definitions of the circular economy and its basic principles, so that they will be able to educate students on the individual topics with appropriate adaptations. Students will gain a comprehensive view of the circular economy and understand its basic principles through direct examples and activities. The action will be implemented in the period March 2024 - May 2024 in primary schools located in the territory of Strovolos Municipality. Teaching children how to use and experience the principles of the circular economy and how they relate to the sustainable development goals provides a solid basis for them to think critically about consumerism, waste management and sustainable living. Encouraging them to turn 'rubbish' into 'treasures' helps them to see products in a new light and can be the key to a greener future.
