Mission & Goals
The European film festival "Scanorama" offers a high-quality alternative to the consumerist approach to cinema, emphasizing a carefully curated program and exploring new and unconventional formats for screening films. Now in its 22nd consecutive year, the festival examines the impact of cultural, social, and political contexts, as well as technological changes, on the creation and understanding of films. It highlights the importance of a productive dialogue between filmmakers, audiences, and professional critics, and cultivates a discerning viewer capable of critically evaluating audiovisual narratives.
EU Legislative Interests
"Scanorama" aims to become not only a model of film culture but also of social responsibility. Festival focus - implementing universal design principles and integrating them into most areas of the festival. The goal is to ensure that as many people as possible, regardless of their physical, sensory, or social abilities, can fully participate in cultural events. Working with socially vulnerable groups, the festival aims to maintain a balance between free and paid film screenings. Discounts on tickets are offered to seniors, people with disabilities, students, and schoolchildren. Depending on financial capabilities, the festival strives to adapt films for distribution to people with visual and hearing impairments. Arrangements are made for attendees with disabilities to comfortably attend and participate in the festival (locations are adapted for those with mobility impairments, films can be watched from home, and the festival collaborates with organizations uniting individuals with disabilities or special needs, such as the Lithuanian Autism Association "Rain Children"). The "Scanorama" team and volunteers are trained in disability awareness and universal design principles. During the festival, screenings and educational programs for youth and families are organized, and public discussions on relevant topics are initiated, involving cinema and broader cultural field professionals. Outside of the festival season, the festival team organizes satellite events, such as the early cinema festival "First Wave," the "Scanorama Summer" project aimed at raising the level of cinema culture in the regions, and will distribute the most popular festival films in Lithuanian cinemas. Additionally, they will organize special educational programs for the regions, free film camps for children and youth, thus expanding the space for European cinema dissemination and cultivating targeted audience groups. "Scanorama" actively participates in the international network of seven European film festivals, "Moving Images – Open Borders" (MIOB), and has been coordinating the network for the past two years. One of the network's key priorities is environmental neutrality in its activities. The festival is committed to continuing the implementation of sustainability practices, contributing to environmental initiatives within the film industry. The network’s environmental project, "Green Charter for Film Festivals," presented at the Cannes Film Festival, created a tool for tracking festival pollution, analyzing statistics, and enhancing sustainability. In 2022, during the "SCA Directions" series of industry events, the Charter project was introduced to Lithuanian film festivals by the project's initiator, Guillaume Callopas, one of the heads of the French "Les Arcs" festival.
Communication Activities
The main strategic communication goal of the European Film Festival "Scanorama" is to expand the festival's audience by highlighting the values it offers to different groups. Key communication activities for the coming years: 1. Educational content campaigns: A series of conversations involving well-known podcast hosts and Instagram discussions will be organized. These live or virtual conversations will focus on upcoming films, featuring well-known public figures and experts in their fields to discuss trends and current issues. This format can also serve as audience education in preparation for the "Scanorama" festival, with film introductions and recommendations directly from the organizers. 2. Top films introduction campaigns: Organizing events that receive extensive media coverage to showcase the festival’s most important films. 3. Media relations: Generating valuable cultural content throughout the year, utilizing the expertise of the "Scanorama" team, as well as the experiences of Lithuanian and international filmmakers, actors, critics, and film policy experts. 4. Ticket sales promotion campaigns: Offering different types of film subscription packages, promoting discounts and special offers on social media, using advertising tools, and collaborating with information partners' platforms for publicity. Text descriptions on social media will, where possible, be supplemented with audio descriptions. Information in festival publications, on the website, and social media platforms will be presented with higher contrast. The communication strategy will prioritize clarity and detail, ensuring the most important information is presented in textual, visual, and audio formats. The festival's communication will also highlight the convenience of using public transport to attend events. In 2024, the traditional printed catalog was replaced by a comprehensive program presentation on the festival's website – www.scanorama.lt, where film descriptions from the program are provided, the juries of the competition programs are introduced, and exclusive interviews with the elite of the film world, prepared by professional foreign film critics specifically for "Scanorama," are published. A special film publication titled "Contours of Changing Times" will also be released, which will review European film trends, reveal the contexts of film creation, and retrospectively analyze the history of European cinema.
