Mission & Goals
Kestrel is a joint initiative between ESB Group, Bord Gáis Energy and dCarbonX, focused on developing large-scale, long-duration energy storage infrastructure to support Europe’s energy security and decarbonisation objectives. The project aims to repurpose existing depleted offshore gas field to provide strategic underground energy storage, initially for natural gas and designed to transition over time to renewable gases such as green hydrogen or biomethane. By enabling the storage of energy at scale, Kestrel supports system resilience, integration of renewable energy and the development of future hydrogen markets. The initiative engages with European and national stakeholders on issues related to energy infrastructure, security of supply and the transition to a low-carbon energy system.
