Mission & Goals
The IHBA, founded in 2009, aims to promote and support the sustainable and bio-regional production and use of hemp-based construction materials and by-products worldwide. The association focuses on gathering and sharing knowledge about these materials and systems, connecting those developing and using them with those interested in learning more. It also assists members in developing systems for producing and utilizing these materials and systems, connecting those developing and using them with those interested in learning more. It also assists members in developing systems for producing and utilizing these materials in vernacular and contemporary architectural styles suited to their regions. In addition, the IHBA educates and informs government and trade bodies to establish the infrastructure necessary for creating a global hemp building industry while striving to minimize the environmental impact of such materials.
EU Legislative Interests
Construction Products Regulation (CPR, Regulation (EU) No 305/2011) for sustainable building materials standardization, the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD), and the European Green Deal framework including the Revised Renewable Energy Directive (RED III). For bio-based composites like hempcrete, Proposal for a regulation of the European Parliament and of the Council establishing a Union certification framework for carbon removals. European Bauhaus initiative. 2020 new circular economy action plan – For a cleaner and more competitive Europe Proposal for a regulation laying down harmonised conditions for the marketing of construction products (recast of the Construction Products Regulation).
