Mission & Goals
The International Union of Marine Insurance (IUMI) is a professional body which is run by and for its members. IUMI represents national and international marine insurers and reinsurers, and considers issues of interest to the worldwide marine insurance industry. IUMI currently has over 40 national associations as members, protecting and advancing their interests. IUMI’s roots date back to 1874.
EU Legislative Interests
- Safety of container and roro vessels (e.g. fire risks posed by dangerous good or electric vehicles, and containers lost at sea) - Sanctions - Maritime security - Cyber security - eFreight & digital trade documents - Autonomous transport (maritime and trucks) - Sustainability and Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) issues - Cargo theft
Communication Activities
IUMI received support from the EU member States for a submission to the 12th sessions of the International Maritime Organization's Sub-Committee on Ship Systems and Equipment (SSE). The document promotes improved safety regulations for low pressure fuel pipes which have caused numerous engine room fires. The submission will be discussed at the SSE 12 Committee meeting in March 2026. If appropriate, EU representatives may be invited as guest speakers at IUMI events or webinars. Additional Information
From March 2026 onwards, a third colleague will start working for IUMI on our policy and advocacy work. This person is the only one who is working on policy issues 100% of their time.
