Mission & Goals

The International Service for Human Rights is an independent, non-governmental organisation dedicated to promoting and protecting human rights. We achieve this by supporting human rights defenders, strengthening human rights systems, and leading and participating in coalitions for human rights change. With limited resources and high demand, our work focuses on those human rights defenders who are most at risk, where our support can protect and strengthen them as agents of change. This includes: •Defenders working on equality and non-discrimination, including women human rights defenders, LGBTIQ defenders, and anti-racism and migrant/refugee rights defenders. •Defenders seeking good governance and transparency •Defenders working on business and human rights, environment, and sustainability •Defenders working to promote democratic freedoms and advance accountability

EU Legislative Interests

ISHR works with partners in the EU and with EU countries, including on foreign policy, multilateral human rights promotion, and as part of our programme on migrant rights. ISHR collaborates with EU and EU member states in human rights mechanisms such as the UN Human Rights Council and UN GA in New York. Specific initiatives include bilateral human rights dialogues; implementation of EU Guidelines on the Protection of Human Rights Defenders; and EU foreign policy at multilateral and regional human rights institutions, including through the Human Rights and Democracy Network (HRDN).

Communication Activities

ISHR projects focus on our three areas of work, namely capacity-building and advocacy support to defenders; engagement with UN member states and systems to improve accessibility and effectiveness; and at the national level, particularly in Latin America, West and Central Africa as well as in Asia, to advance laws and policies which explicitly recognize and protect HRDs. Information about activities (including consultations at international and regional level), and events (predominantly in Geneva and New York), is available on our website.
