Mission & Goals
INHSU is a global network working to improve the health and well-being of people who use drugs, with a specific focus on hepatitis C, infectious diseases, and harms that can occur from drug use. We focus on knowledge exchange, provide education, advocate for good practice and evidence-based policies, and unite stakeholders—including researchers, healthcare providers, harm reduction experts, policymakers, advocates, and people with living and lived experience of drug use.
EU Legislative Interests
INHSU is focused on EU policies in the fields of viral hepatitis and other issues affecting people who use drugs, including: - EU Drugs Strategy. - Europe's Beating Cancer Plan: Prevention of cancer caused by infections. - Council Recommendation of 21 June 2024 on vaccine-preventable cancers. - EU Global Health Strategy.
Communication Activities
INHSU host an annual conference presenting the latest research and models of care on topics related to the health of people who use drugs. The location varies each year. The conference brings together healthcare providers, community members, researchers, advocates and policy makers globally. We also organise dedicated policy events and policy communications aimed at raising awareness of health issues that can affect people who use drugs. INHSU specifically collaborated with EUDA and ECDC to develop knowledge exchange materials and training for healthcare providers which seek to directly influence the EU Beating Cancer Plan, see here: https://eurohepp.ecdc.europa.eu/about.html INHSU seeks to influence the recent European Council Recommendation (C/2024/4259) on vaccine-preventable cancers, which advocate fora strengthening of national efforts to reach the elimination targets including greater attention for scaling up vaccination services for target groups including people who inject drugs and people in prison. To do this, INHSU collaborates with EU agencies to develop targeted knowledge exchange resources and training programs for providers delivering services for viral hepatitis. We contribute to the EU Global Health Strategy by convening our conference, related projects and events, and contributing to other EU organisations projects that aim to deliver better health and well-being of people across the life course, strengthen health systems and advance universal health coverage.
