Mission & Goals

IISD strives to address the root causes of some of the greatest challenges facing our planet today - ecological destruction, social exclusion, unfair laws and economic rules, a changing climate. Through research, analysis and knowledge sharing, we identify and champion sustainable solutions that make a difference. We report on international negotiations, conduct rigorous research, and engage citizens, businesses and policy-makers on the shared goal of developing sustainably. IISD's mission is to solve today’s greatest sustainable development challenges. Through trusted research, advice, and collaboration, we transform bold ideas into real-world change that leaves no one behind..

EU Legislative Interests

The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the SDGs, EU Taxonomy for Sustainable Activities, EU strategy on adaptation to climate change; EU and green economy, EU Economic and Trade Negotiations and Agreements, EU and the Energy Charter Treaty, China-EU, Multilateral Investment Court (and related discussions under UNCITRAL), EU foreign investment screening.

Communication Activities

IISD’s Economic Law and Policy program covers various topics involving the above EU files. For example, its team devoted to investment law and policy is actively involved in the UNCITRAL Working Group III process on investor-state dispute settlement (ISDS) reform; tracking and analyzing the modernization negotiations of the Energy Charter Treaty; supporting and advising developing countries as they develop national investment codes, model BITs; and other investment laws and policies at the national, regional, and international level. We also publish a series of “Best Practices” Advisory Bulletins devoted to specific, technical and legal issues in the space of ISDS and international investment agreement (IIA) reform. IISD is also the publisher of Investment Treaty News, our flagship journal on investment law and policy. It is published quarterly and send to several thousand subscribers in English, French, and Spanish. IISD is also the publisher of the SDG Knowledge Hub and a co-convener of the Geneva 2030 Ecosystem, both devoted to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals and providing the reporting, analysis, and engagement support to facilitate these discussions and efforts. In addition, IISD has recently launched Trade and Sustainability Review, a quarterly magazine on trade and sustainable development, which includes coverage of EU trade negotiations, among other activities IISD, in partnership with the MAVA Foundation and the ECMWF, is also home of the Sustainable Asset Valuation (SAVi), a methodology for conducting financial valuations of infrastructure assets that incorporates environmental, social, and governance risks and externalities. This work is now informed by data from the Copernicus Climate Data Store. Related work includes our "Second Opinions” analysis on green and sustainability bonds, provided jointly with CICERO Shades of Green. We also publish the Credit Enhancement Inventory of financial de-risking instruments. The same team working on SAVi has launched the NBI Global Resource Centre, the new web portal, which aims to enhance our knowledge on the performance of NBI through data, training, and sector-specific valuations.
