Mission & Goals

ICES is an intergovernmental scientific organisation that provides independent, quality-assured marine science and advice to governments and international bodies. ICES achieves this through our network of nearly 6000 scientists from nearly 700 marine institutes in our 19 member countries and beyond. These experts turn raw data into policy-relevant knowledge for EU and government bodies. 14 of 19 ICES member countries are also member states of the European Union. By contractual agreement, ICES performs advisory services and delivers advice products to DG MARE and DG ENV.

EU Legislative Interests

Scientific advice and evidence relevant to EU policies on marine and maritime governance, including sustainable fisheries, ecosystem based management, biodiversity conservation, climate change impacts on oceans, and implementation of international ocean related agreements and strategies.

Communication Activities

No specific communication or campaigning activities directed at EU legislative or policy processes; activities are limited to scientific publications, advisory reports, and participation in expert and advisory meetings upon request.
