Mission & Goals
The International Bureau for Epilepsy is a recognized international umbrella body representing national epilepsy organizations that have a specific interest in improving the social condition and quality of life of people with epilepsy and their careers. With 160 chapters, in 110 countries around the world, IBE's overarching vision is to achieve a transformational social change for people with epilepsy worldwide. IBE works across three main strategic objectives: 1. To make epilepsy a global public health priority 2. To empower and amplify the voice of people with epilepsy 3. To serve and support our chapters in all regions IBE works closely with people with lived experience across all of its strategic and programmatic activities via its Community Council and Global Youth Team. IBE maintains a close working relationship with the International League Against Epilepsy; together organising international and regional epilepsy congresses. IBE enjoys official WHO non-state actor status.
EU Legislative Interests
IBE is eager to ensure that epilepsy is covered by work under the EU's public health and research activities related to mental health, brain health, rare diseases, etc. In particular, we are following the EU HealthTogethier Initiative on NCDs and the current/upcoming Horizon programmes. We will play a role in shaping the planned European Brain Health Parternship, and will support the SANT committee in calling for the creation of an EU 'neurology strategy'. We are also monitoring work on EU pharmaceutical strategy, EU health data space, etc.
Communication Activities
IBE organises the annual International Epilepsy Day on February each year. Previously this has included events in the European Parliament.
