Mission & Goals
The International Bar Association (IBA), established in 1947, is the world’s leading organisation of international legal practitioners, bar associations & law societies. The IBA influences the development of law reform & shapes the future of the global legal profession.It has a membership of more than 80,000 individual lawyers & 190 bar associations & law societies worldwide. The aims & objectives:To promote an exchange of information between legal associations globally;To support the independence of judiciary & the right of lawyers to practise their profession without interference;Support of human rights for lawyers through IBAHRI. The IBA established its Human Rights Institute (IBAHRI) in 1995 under the honorary presidency of Nelson Mandela, to promote & protect human rights & the independence of the legal profession under a just rule of law. Communication Activities
Since 2004, the IBA's European Regional Forum has been developing and strengthening the existence of the IBA within Europe by promoting its goals to both members and non-members, disseminating professional know-how, and assisting committees and other constituencies of the IBA. Link: https://www.ibanet.org/unit/Regional+Fora/committee/European+Regional+Forum/3109 Survey on implementation of the EU Shareholders’ Rights Directive II in the EU: The IBA Securities Law Committee has, together with law firms from the 28 EU Member States, conducted a survey in order to compare the national implementation of the EU Shareholders’ Rights Directive II in those jurisdictions. The EU asked all stakeholders for their views about existing mechanisms for strengthening compliance and dealing with rule of law breaches by Member States. The IBA's response, drafted with the assistance of the Oxford Programme on International Peace and Security, reiterates its commitment to promoting the rule of law through a variety of means. In Brussels, the IBA had co-hosted a half-day roundtable with the European Commission and the International Labour Organization on topic of workplace bullying and sexual harassment.
