Mission & Goals

The Integrated Carbon Observation System (ICOS) is a distributed European-wide Research Infrastructure producing high-precision data on greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere, as well as on carbon fluxes between the atmosphere, the land surface, and the ocean. ICOS provides standardized and open data from more than 180 measurement stations across 16 European countries. ICOS provides data that researchers transform into scientific knowledge to improve our understanding of the Earth system. Evidence-based knowledge on carbon emissions and sinks contributes to the UN Sustainable Development Goals and EU Societal Challenges, especially climate change. ICOS is a major European research infrastructure contributing to the global network of international climate organizations. The knowledge generated by the use of ICOS data supports the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), the Paris Agreement and the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCC).

EU Legislative Interests

ICOS is following actively the policies of the EU in the following domains: Energy, Climate Change & Environment, Research & Innovation, International Cooperation, EU-Africa Cooperation in Research & innovation. Examples of EU policies of interest: Union certification framework for carbon removals, Nature-Restoration Law, EU-AU Strategy, Partnership on Climate Change and Sustainable Energy (CCSE)...

Communication Activities

ICOS has been involved in a number of European Horizon 2020 projects: RINGO, ENVRIPLUS, SEACRIFOG, RISCAPE, EUDAT2020, EOSC Pilot, VERIFY, ENVRIfair, ERIC Forum, CoCO2, PAUL, KADI... It is now a partner or coordinator in several Horizon Europe projects: ERIC FORUM2, GEORGE, EYE-CLIMA, NUBICOS...
