Communication Activities

The Institute of Makers of Explosives (IME), a non-governmental organization (NGO) member of the United Nations (UN) Sub-Committee of Experts on the Transport of Dangerous Goods (TDG) proposed and obtained a globally harmonized marking format for explosives security markings. The purpose of the markings is to provide a standard of explosives product marking that will allow for supply-chain accountability and tracing of explosives in commerce if products are lost or misappropriated. Specifically, a new note was added to chapter 1.4 (Security) of the Model Regulations to provide a format for countries to consider whenever explosives security markings are required. The markings described in the note are based upon EC Directive 2008/43/EC. IME continues to participate in the work of the UN TDG Sub-Committee and its Working Group on Explosives (EWG) and currently serves as secretary of the EWG. IME is also an NGO of the UN Sub-Committee of Experts on the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals (GHS). Most recently IME actively participated in the complete revision of Chapter 2.1 of the GHS document related to the Class of Explosives.
