Mission & Goals
IMIEU was founded in 2004 to facilitate improved solutions where economic development conflicts with environmental improvement and sustainability. This influence is excerted by initiating projects from its own budget (supplemented by budget from partner organisations). These projects are funded by IMIEU and its partners, composed of innovative start-ups in the field of sustainability, industries, expert institutes and sometimes regional authorities. These projects have an impact on the local situation from a projects basis.As far as influencing EU policies throught its Brussels office, the following strategy is followed, Active participation in the relevant intergroups: Intergroup on Climate Change, Biodiversity and Sustainable Development, Intergroup on Sky and Space, Intergroup on the new Green Deal and Intergroup on Sustainable, Long-term investments & Competitive European Industry.
EU Legislative Interests
1. EU biodiversity policy, Natura 2000 and regulation in relation to economic activities 2. EU R & D Policy: Horizon Europe calls in preparation and (improving) innovative SME access to Horizon Europe programmes. 3. Aviation Safety Certification in development Rules for innovative airships by EASA, upcoming regulation and proposals by EASA on staff of manned airship operation and maintenance 4. The EU efforts for further detailing of the for the new Clean Sky Partnership on Clean Aviation 5. Providing input on the consultation for the European Drone Strategy, closing on 31 December 2021. 6. EU Aviation Policy and European Research and Innovation Policy; jointly with the Research Executive Agency as well as DG RTD, IMIEU is developing with European and International Stakeholders (see www.u-lta.eu ) a Research and Innovation Agenda for Lighter-Than-Air Technology applications.
Communication Activities
1) DG Environment/ Nature Unit, – Natura 2000 and biodiversity- contributed to guidance on Ports and Estuaries and Natura 2000 from its experience on port environmental issues in relation to port deepening and container port expansion. https://ec.europa.eu/environment/nature/info/pubs/docs/leaflets/estuary/en.pdf 2) DG ENER / DG Clima/ DG Mare- Ocean Energy-Participated as board member to the Environmental Planning steering board of the Ocean Energy Forum of DG Mare, DG RTD, DG ENER. 3) DG RTD, DG GROW, EEAS, DG Mobility - on future aviation. IMIEU initiated a technology platform on lighter-than-air drones /airships with EU, Indian, Californian and (South African participation), see also First EC co-operative partner in this is DG RTD, its adviser on Future Aviation. http://imieu.eu/lift-off-at-european-level-for-strategic-co-operation-on-lighter-than-air-technology 4) DG ENER/ DG RTD Renewable Energy Policy and Innovation, IMIEU initiated a technology platfrom on salinity gradient energy (SGP), co-operative partners include DG ENER, DG RTD, and IRENA (International Renewable Energy Agency). See also www.salinitygradientpower.eu 5) Providing input in consultations of the European Commissions on drones and innovative Future aviation, lastly on the new EASA document on innovative manned airships, see also Proposed Special condition “SC GAS” Gas Airships - Issue 01 6) On April 3, at the Committee of the Regions IMIEU participated as a Consultant.
