Mission & Goals

The Institute for Climate Protection, Energy and Mobility (IKEM) is a non-profit think tank that explores pathways towards a sustainable society, focussing on the interactions between the legal, economic, and political framework behind the German and European transition of energy and mobility. IKEM unites around 60 experts from various academic backgrounds. IKEM is a public charity and affiliated with the University of Greifswald. Since 2017, the Institute has held Special Consultative Status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council.

EU Legislative Interests

IKEM is involved in several research projects funded by EU (Erasmus, Horizon 2020, Interreg) and national programs. IKEM's research activities relate to the EU efforts regarding climate mitigation and renewable energies (Green New Deal, RePowerEU), sustainable transportation (Sustainable and Smart Mobility Strategy) and an innovative building sector (New European Bauhaus). IKEM also works on the implementation of EU legislation on the national level.

Communication Activities

IKEM’s research, publishing and project work feeds into EU’ and Member States’ climate protection and energy debates, and makes valuable contributions to improving policy-making in the fields of energy, mobility, climate mitigation and adaptation. IKEM serves as knowledge partner among EU decision-makers and provides expertise and policy advice to the European Commission and the European Parliament. IKEM’s activities are carried out through bilateral meetings, organisation of conferences, workshops, seminars etc., interventions in relevant platforms, stakeholder coalitions, replies to public consultations and publications addressed to EU policy-makers.
