Mission & Goals

İHD is a non-governmental, independent, and voluntary body. The association, founded in 1986, is the oldest and largest HR organisation in Turkey and its sole and specific goal is to promote “human rights and freedoms.” İHD issues special reports on various human rights issues including annual reports on human rights violations in Turkey. These include freedom of expression, legal system, impunity, enforced disappearances, murders by unknown assailants, extrajudicial executions, torture and ill-treatment, and notably gross human rights violations. İHD is an organisation that submits shadow reports before committees at the UN and the CoE that Turkey is a party to. İHD also targets EU and EU members states as well as EP and EC. İHD works in cooperation with the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights and the CoE Commissioner for Human Rights and special rapporteurs.

EU Legislative Interests

Recently, İHD did not make any proposals for EU legislations or policies. But İHD is an organisation that submits shadow reports and info-notes to EU institutions including EP, CoE, EC. İHD provides input to Turkey report

Communication Activities

İHD conducts communication campaigns tagetting EU institutions as well as other local and international decision makers. These can be in the format of advocacy missions to political centres of Europe, social media campaigns, publications like reports, info-notes, surveys, info-graphics, etc. The outputs and outcomes of communication activities are disseminated on İHD web site and social media accounts.

Member Of

İHD is a member of the International Federation of Human Rights (FIDH) based in Paris and of EuroMed Rights based in Copenhagen. İHD founded and is a member of the Human Rights Joint Platform (İHOP) in Turkey, while it founded the Turkish Coalition for the International Criminal Court and still serves as its speaker. İHD also founded the Human Rights Foundation of Turkey (HRFT) with a group of physicians in 1990.

The association, which was founded in 1986 by 98 human rights defenders, today has 28 branches, 6 representative offices, and 7,945 members.
