Mission & Goals
Initiative for Science in Europe (ISE) is an independent non-for profit association bringing together European learned societies and scientific research organisations, operating throughout all disciplines and across all research sectors. ISE supports all fields of science and technology (including the humanities and social sciences) all over Europe, involves active researchers in the design and implementation of European science policies and advocates sound independent scientific advice in the development of European policies. ISE has been instrumental in promoting disruptive excellence-based funding programmes for scientific research and played a central and decisive role in the creation of the European Research Council (ERC).
EU Legislative Interests
Research policies, Higher Education, and Innovation: ISE is highly concerned about these topics and strives for them to get sufficient funding and good practices for an efficient implementation. Our focus is on: a) Framework Programmes (currently Horizon Europe), ISE addresses both funding and structural issues; b) Role of basic research in collaborative projects, including public-private partnerships; c) Excellence and Widening participation; d) Sustainable Researchers' careers; e) Reform of Research Assessment, including Open Science (our angle is that of Learned Societies representing active researchers); f) Creation of a space where politicians and representatives of research and innovation consult each other on a regular basis to promote collaboration between the actors who decide and those who implement and can advise, the ERA Forum is such platform. Support Academic Freedom as a fundamental right for excellent and innovative research to achieve the best. Enhance work conditions and job security for researchers and creat a dedicated programme to promote this. Propose scientific advisory mechanisms to European institutions, Consult learned societies and scientific organisations taking into account their contribution in the definition of strategic priorities which must be broad and inclusive.
