Mission & Goals
Informatics Europe is the voice of the Informatics research and education community in Europe. Bringing together ca. 200 university departments, research labs, and industrial members, today we represent over 50'000 informatics researchers across more than 30 European countries. As a non-profit membership association, our activities are mainly performed by scientist volunteers. Our mission is to empower and unite the European informatics community, to find concerted positions, act on shared priorities, and support policy-making in Education, Research, and the Social Impact of informatics in Europe. We do so by addressing strategic matters and emerging trends in informatics and related fields, fostering unity in the variety of our member institutions, and promoting pan-Europe.

- Digital Education Action Plan (2021-2027) - Recognition of Informatics as an essential foundational discipline for school education in Europe - Ethical and Societal Impacts of Informatics in Europe - Teaching Ethics in Informatics - Diversity and Inclusion, including Gender Balance, in Informatics - Digital Talent Gap in Europe
Communication Activities
- Informatics for All Initiative (created to give due recognition to Informatics as an essential foundational discipline for school education in Europe. Strategy report published in March 2018). - When Computers Decide: European Recommendations on Machine-Learned Automated Decision Making (white paper, jointly with ACM Europe, with recommendations on the technical, ethical, legal, economic, societal and educational ramifications of Machine-Learned Automated Decision Making). Discussion panels held in Brussels in March 2018 and February 2019 with members of the European Commission, from Directorate DG Research and Innovation, DG Connect and DG Education and members of the IE Board and ACM Europe Council on the recommendation of the initiatives described above. - In partnership with DG CONNECT IE organised in October the workshop: “Bridging the Digital Talent Gap - Towards Successful Industry-University Partnerships”. The event brought together higher education organisations, industry and public policymakers to reflect and act on the problem of the Digital Talent Gap in Europe. - IE was a partner on the Ethics4EU (“ethics for you”) Project. It was an Erasmus+ transnational project led by the Technological University Dublin that explored issues around teaching ethics in Computer Science. Ethics4EU developed new curricula, best practices and learning resources for digital ethics for computer science students - IE was the initiator of the EUGAIN COST ACTION and holds the Grant Holder Manager role. The main aim of this COST action is to improve gender balance in Informatics through the creation and strengthening of a truly multicultural European network of academics working at the forefront of efforts in their countries, institutions, and research communities. - Informatics Europe is a partner in the Inclusion4EU Project. It is an Erasmus+ transnational project led by the Technological University Dublin aiming to improve Computer Science lectures and students' understanding of inclusive software design. This project is a natural extension of the Ethics4EU project and will develop repositories, tools and expertise to promote truly inclusive software design practices. - Informatics Europe is a partner and/or submitter of several COST Action and Erasmus+ projects on Mental health and Diversity, Green ICT, AI Literacy and Data Sustainability. They are currently being prepared or under revision by the EU-related offices. - IE was part of the COMMISSION EXPERT GROUP ON ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE (AI) AND DATA IN EDUCATION AND TRAINING (E03774) - IE is currently part of the EU Commission Expert Group for the development of guidelines on high-quality informatics - IE has issued, and made DGCONNECT aware of, several recommendations such as "The Critical Omission of Software Technology in the EIC Work Programme 2025"

Additional Information
COST Action 19122: for the year 2024, the reported grant corresponds to the total received, of which 33’229 EUR (15% of the final costs of the EUGAIN COST Action) is the contribution to IE's operating costs as Action Grant Holder. The Action finished in October 2024 and the last instalment was received in December 2024. In October 2024, we received the second tranche (40%) of the Erasmus+ project Inclusion4EU, amounting to EUR 20,000. This amount was recorded as accrued income for the 2025 financial year. Additionally, due to the postponement of a significant portion of the activities originally scheduled for 2024 to 2025, we reclassified EUR 15,000 from the 1st instalment, received in 2023 and initially accounted as accrued income for 2024, as accrued income for 2025. As a result of these two adjustments, a total of EUR 35,000 has been accrued for the 2025 financial year. Contributions from Bending Spoons, IBM, Google and Springer include the annual membership fee as well as the sponsorship of a given activity (i.e. CV portal, summer school and two awards).
