Mission & Goals
The Infectious Disease Alliance (IDA) is a global civil society organization dedicated to addressing infectious disease challenges through advocacy, policy reform, and strategic partnerships. IDA unites stakeholders across sectors—civil society, scientific societies, patient groups, governments, and the private sector—to promote integrated solutions that prevent, treat, and control infectious diseases worldwide. Our mission is to elevate infectious diseases on the global health agenda, ensuring equitable access to care, medicines, and innovative technologies, particularly for vulnerable populations and LMICs. We advocate for evidence-based policies, foster collaboration, and support research and development in areas such as AMR, vaccine-preventable diseases, and zoonotic diseases. With specialized committees and a One Health approach, IDA focuses on cross-cutting themes, including primary healthcare integration, digital health, and emergency management.
EU Legislative Interests
The Infectious Disease Alliance (IDA) focuses its advocacy efforts on a range of specific EU legislative proposals and policies related to infectious diseases, health systems, and global health equity. The main EU policies and proposals targeted include: EU4Health Programme IDA engages with the implementation and funding priorities of the EU4Health Programme, advocating for enhanced support for infectious disease prevention, One Health initiatives, and antimicrobial resistance (AMR) strategies. Pharmaceutical Strategy for Europe IDA contributes to discussions on improving access to affordable medicines, fostering innovation in the development of diagnostics, treatments, and vaccines for infectious diseases, and addressing shortages in the pharmaceutical supply chain. Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) Action Plan Advocacy includes supporting the European Commission's One Health Action Plan Against Antimicrobial Resistance, promoting integrated approaches to AMR prevention and encouraging sustainable use of antimicrobials across human, animal, and environmental health sectors. EU Global Health Strategy IDA aligns with the EU Global Health Strategy, advocating for stronger EU leadership in global health governance and increased financial and technical support for low- and middle-income countries in combating infectious diseases. Regulation on Serious Cross-Border Threats to Health IDA supports efforts to enhance EU health security by improving preparedness, monitoring, and response mechanisms for serious cross-border health threats, including infectious disease outbreaks. European Green Deal – Health Impacts Advocacy includes integrating health considerations into the European Green Deal by addressing the intersection of climate change, environmental degradation, and emerging infectious diseases, particularly zoonotic diseases. Farm to Fork Strategy IDA targets this strategy to address food safety and public health risks, including zoonotic diseases linked to agricultural practices and antimicrobial use in livestock. EU Digital Health and Care Strategy Advocacy focuses on advancing the use of digital health technologies, data-sharing platforms, and electronic health records to improve the prevention and management of infectious diseases across Europe. Horizon Europe Framework Programme IDA advocates for increased research funding and innovation in infectious diseases under the Health Cluster of Horizon Europe, particularly in areas like vaccine development, diagnostics, and digital health solutions. Council Recommendation on Strengthening Prevention Through Vaccination IDA supports the implementation of policies promoting equitable access to vaccines, increasing vaccination rates, and combating vaccine hesitancy across the EU. By targeting these policies, IDA aims to ensure that infectious diseases remain a priority on the EU’s health and research agenda while fostering collaboration between policymakers, civil society, and the private sector to achieve tangible health outcomes.
