Mission & Goals
Independent Diplomat (ID) is a unique, non-profit advisory group in the world of international relations, diplomacy and conflict resolution. We provide advice and assistance to democratic governments and political groups across the three pillars of contemporary diplomacy: political strategy, international law and public diplomacy. We help those most affected by issues to access the high-level political discussions about them and to advocate for the legitimate interests of those they represent. Our work therefore promotes greater inclusiveness in diplomacy, and so contributes to more just and sustainable solutions to international crises and conflict.
EU Legislative Interests
Given the diplomatic nature of Independent Diplomat's work, our main target policy areas are the EU Common Foreign Security Policy and Common Security Defence Policy, specifically related to conflict resolution, and cyber and climate diplomacy. While our interlocutors are mainly representatives of the European External Action Service, we also engage with the European Commission and Parliament on certain issues that fall within their competence and/or programming responsibilities that relate to international issues that we work on. Examples include trade (specifically providing analysis to inform sanctions activity against Russia in the context of the Ukraine war and helping to reduce non-compliance/sanctions evasion), development and humanitarian activity in specific conflict/crisis contexts that Independent Diplomat currently works on (eg. Yemen, Mali, Myanmar, Ukraine and Western Sahara), cross-cutting issues such as conflict resolution/mediation/negotiations policy and practice, as well as the women, peace and security agenda and refugee inclusion.
Communication Activities
Independent Diplomat does not typically conduct extensive external communication campaigns or produce publications related to the above issues. Our main focus is on supporting better policy analysis and outcomes through facilitating meetings for policy makers with our partners who are directly affected by conflict/crisis and/or other global trends, or offering our own analysis on developments. As part of that, we may help our partners to produce or distribute certain products (eg. letters, statements or press releases) as appropriate to staff within the EU institutions or Member States but this tends to be on an ad-hoc basis. The same applies for contributing to any public events.

Organisation Members
Independent Diplomat is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organisation in the US (which acts as the main headquarters) and a registered charity in the UK and Switzerland. We do not have any members or any affiliate/partner organisations in terms of formal organisational structure. However, we work with a number of marginalised democratic governments, opposition groups and non-state actors to help them to access and influence the high level international processes that affect them.
