Mission & Goals
In the increasingly digital world, our organisation helps European startup, scaleups, investors and other actors of the innovation ecosystem navigate complex policy issues. iconomy helps these players understand European and national regulation, define their position and interests and build the necessary partnerships to engage in the related discourse. We often also help establish internal infrastructures and resources for public and regulatory affairs work during organizational growth. Having grown out of the Internet Economy Foundation and it's mission to support the competitiveness of Europe's tech ecosystem, iconomy is especially dedicated to robust legislation that help (re)create fair competition and a level playing field in the digital arena.
EU Legislative Interests
Given iconomy's long advocacy for ambitious platform regulation, especially with focus on establishing a level playing field for Europe's tech ecosystem, we actively engage in discussions, workshops and activities around the Digital Markets Act and the Digital Services Act. In the context of the DMA, iconomy advocates especially for its robust and swift enforcement in the fields of online search engines, app stores and browsers. We and our partners are convinced that especially the DMA's self-preferencing ban (Art. 6.5) has the potential to re-establish fair competition between Gatekeepers and European challengers. Regarding the DSA, iconomy advocates for its robust enforcement, particularly within risk-mitigation systems designed to address financial scams and fraudulent pages appearing in search results. Besides competition policy, iconomy also focuses on other fields related to the digital and tech sector, for example the Digital Omnibuses proposals, GDPR, the AI Act, Travel Package Directive, Digital Service Taxation, Payement Service Directive and Regulation, the 28th Regime, EU Consumer Protection topics and the Eurostack, as well as other regulatory initiatives targeted at Europe's startup and scaleup ecosystem.
Communication Activities
iconomy regularly co-signs and supports open letters in different coalitions and organizes political coalitions around specific priority areas itself. One prominent example is the initiative for neutral search (www.neutralsearch.eu) that has more than 140 signatories. Additionally, team members join (semi-)public workshops and events hosted by different actors. For example, DMA workshops hosted by DG COMP, as well as information meetings and discussions by MEPs and their teams. iconomy also provides inputs/produces policy papers and policy communication. Additionally, iconomy also provides input for relevant Public Consultations.
