Mission & Goals

Hydrogen Scotland, formerly known as the Scottish Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Association (SHFCA) promotes and develops Scottish expertise in fuel cells and hydrogen technologies. Hydrogen Scotland (SHFCA) brings together Scotland’s specialised fuel cell companies, energy utilities, industry, academic institutions, research and development bodies, specialist consultants, Scottish Enterprise, Highlands & Islands Enterprise, South of Scotland Enterprise, cities and local authorities with an interest in Hydrogen & Fuel Cells. Hydrogen Scotland (SHFCA) membership is open to all-comers, and includes a significant number of members throughout Europe and internationally.

EU Legislative Interests

Hydrogen Scotland has particular interest in legislative proposals or policies which can support the deployment of hydrogen and/or fuel cell technologies as part of the transition to a low carbon energy system and reduce the threat of damaging climate change. Hydrogen Scotland follows policies on environment, energy, and transport. Hydrogen Scotland also has a focus on safety, wellbeing, and achieving the Just Transition to a low carbon economy.

Communication Activities

Hydrogen Scotland holds regular member events which are mostly open to non-members and are typically free to attend. These events are webinars and in-person events. Since 2009 Hydrogen Scotland has held an annual in-person conference (online in 2020 and 2021). Hydrogen Scoltand supports wider communications about the benefits of hydrogen and fuel cells at industry conferences and technical seminars, as well as public events.

Member Of

Hydrogen Scotland is not a formal member of any associations but is involved in a number of networks and has established Memoranda of Understanding with over 40 other associations and trade bodies. Hydrogen Scotland Associate Member Directory: https://www.hydrogenscotland.com/associate-members/ Hydrogen Scotland has established links with many other hydrogen trade associations and organisations who have aligned objectives and activities. Hydrogen Scotland shares relevant information and experiences with our Associate members to promote cooperation and exchange of best practice in the fields of business, R&D, and policy across the wider membership of our organisations. Topics include skills development, safety, planning and implementation of national and regional hydrogen strategies, and on accelerating the ramp-up of the hydrogen economy.

Additional Information

Hydrogen Scotland (SHFCA) was a partner in the Horizon 2020 BIG HIT project, which ran from May 2016 until April 2022 and was supported by the Clean Hydrogen Partnership (previously the Fuel Cells and Hydrogen Joint Undertaking 2), an EU public-private partnership.
